The moment was a year after Hurricane Katrina and I was in New Orleans looking for what Harry Belafonte describes as “the forgotten people” of America. I was waiting by this flag when a 73-year-old man walked by and I asked him if he could stop for a photograph. He told me he was hurrying to get home, but I convinced him to pose for one frame, which he did. He had lost a lot of his personal belongings and had suffered damages to his home because of the hurricane, he told me.
