FAQ

VII FINE PRINTS

The VII Fine Prints are archival quality and are approved by each VII photographer. Archival quality is a non-technical term that suggests that a material or product is permanent, durable or chemically stable, and that it can therefore safely be used for preservation purposes. The phrase is not quantifiable; some standards exist that describe how long an 'archival' or 'archival quality' material will last, but they are ever evolving. The lifespan of a color print is around 60 years. Our goal is to provide you with the highest quality prints available at fair prices so that you can enjoy the print in your home, office or school.

EDITIONS

Over the coming years, VII plans to offer a variety of special editions. We are using a modern approach to editioning of prints based on the length of time of the offering and the specific materials used. This allows us to meet the needs and interests of a wide array of followers of our work. If you are a collector of a specific type of print, please feel free to contact us and we can discuss the options.

MATERIALS & PROCESSES

Gelatin silver print is the name for the standard black and white negative printing process (not silver gelatin print). The paper has a light sensitive emulsion composed of silver halides. Through the developing and fixing, processing eliminates unexposed silver to reveal and fix the image. The fiber-based prints can last upwards of 70 to over 100 years, depending on the fixing and handling.

Chromogenic prints, commonly known as C-prints, are the standard negative-based color print process in which three separate color dyes bond to couplers of the silver contained in the paper’s emulsion. The life of a print without obvious fading or image deterioration is over 60 years.

LightJet is a brand name for the type of printing used for the VII Fine Prints. They are made by computers and lasers printing with light on regular chromogenic photo papers, which are then chemically processed the in the same way as a standard enlarger-exposed c-print. With the exception of their digital source, they have the exact same characteristics and archival qualities as a standard chromogenic print.

Our photo prints come with a 75-year brilliant color guarantee. That’s because we develop them using state-of-the-art laser exposure and a traditional wet process. For color images, our UltraHD Photo Prints on high-end Fuji Crystal DP II photo paper bring even the minutest details to life, crystal clear and razor sharp. And for our B&W images, we we create LightJet prints on Ilford B/W paper. Ilford’s panchromatic photo paper allows white tones to shine while the great range of black hues creates enchanting depths. This vibrant appearance is created through strong contrasts and rich tones, and the effect lasts well beyond the first glance; the silver in the material prevents your image from fading for years and years.

In the Direct Print On Aluminum Dibond method, your photo is printed directly onto the white coating of the 1/8" (3 mm) thick composite panel. We use UV Fine Art inks for this state-of-the-art six-color printing process, which is optimized for photo printing. It produces vivid colors and sharp details. The 1/8" (3 mm) aluminum Dibond backing consists of a black polyethylene core sandwiched between 2 aluminum sheets coated platinum-white. A triple-layered composite material, it ensures stability while maintaining a low weight. Ideal for a gallery-quality presentation in any format.

SIGNATURES

All VII Prints are signed by the photographer on a VII Photo Agency signature sticker and applied to the back of the print. All prints are authentic.

Further, you'll receive a Certificate Of Authenticity embossed by VII Photo, which is a standard way of increasing the value of prints since the pre-digital days, and reduces the risk of forgeries. The COA will include:

  • Photographer's name
  • Image title
  • Certificate number
  • Media type
  • The Printer
  • Ink type (inkjet or pigment-based ink)
  • Description of the image
  • Date the print was made

FRAMING

The framing is dependent on the specific edition. For example the direct to aluminum and aluminum-basked include integrated wall-mounts on the back of the picture, making it easy to hang securely. Depending on the size of your picture, we have 3 different wall-mounts, each of which is included in the standard price.
